APC sets three-year exploration for geothermal bid

APC Group Inc. said the exploration phase of its geothermal plant in Northern Philippines may take three years to complete.

APC’s joint venture partner Chevron Geothermal Philippines Holdings Inc. is undertaking the geophysical surveys and mapping at the project site in Kalinga, Apayao, considered the multinational firm’s first major international investment in the country under the Renewable Energy Act of 2008.

“Chevron needs about three years to complete all the studies before we can actually determine how big the power plant will be,” Willy Ocier, APC chairman, president and chief executive, told reporters.

The company is looking at the development of steam fields that can generate at least 100 megawatts in new capacity, providing an additional source of clean baseload power to the Luzon grid.

Chevron would assume the full expense of the exploration. A 100-megawatt geothermal project will cost about $300 million.

In November 2010, APC and its partner, Guidance Management Corp. (GMC), forged a partnership with Chevron in developing the geothermal area. The parties signed a farm-out and a joint operating agreement, which gives APC and GMC the option to take an equity position of up to 40 percent in the geothermal project.

Under the agreement, Chevron will be responsible for the exploration, development and operation of the steam field and power activities.

In 2008, APC subsidiary Aragorn Power and Energy Corp. was granted a geothermal service contract by the Department of Energy. The GSC was converted into a Renewable Energy Service Contract in late March 2010 so the project can avail of the incentives provided under the Renewable Energy Act.

APC is 46.59-percent owned by Belle Corp., the high-end leisure real estate and gaming firm of the Sy family of SM fame.

APC shares added P0.02 to close at P0.70 each on Friday.

They are different just by comparing the business profile of both companies you mentioned. The APC Group you mentioned manufactures and distributes the Arctic Leash™ watertight retractable extension cord reel, the MedReel® and a proprietary line of all weather, indoor/outdoor extension cords under the brand name Arctic Leash™ for home and industrial use.

Oh, that's the exact news I've read.. So they're different from each other. I now know. Thanks for the enlightenment Miss Ruach.. Smile

Belle’s APC Group records another P3-M net loss in Q2

LISTED ENERGY firm APC Group posted another net loss for the second quarter of the year despite an increase in revenues, the company disclosed to the bourse yesterday.
The net loss for the second quarter amounted to P3.1 million compared to P3.8-million loss incurred in the same period last year, the subsidiary of Belle Corp. said.

“The decrease in net loss of P800,000 was basically due to the increase in net income from operations,” the company said in its disclosure, noting however that majority of its revenues came from its manpower services subsidiary Environment and General Services, Inc. (EGSI).

Revenues of the company for the period rose 18% to P86.2 million from P72.9 million in the year previous.

The increase in revenue “was due to the upward adjustment in billing rates as a result of the increase in minimum wage.”

General and administrative expenses of the company grew 17.8% to P10.6 million in the second quarter from P9 million.

Total liabilities of the company increased to P327.9 million from P312.3 million as of June 30.

“This was basically due to the increase in trade payables and accrued expenses of EGSI and APC Parent amounting P11.8 million and P3.8 million, respectively,” the company said.

APC Group has investments in energy-related projects, mining and manpower outsourcing business and telecommunications. Last year, APC Group announced Aragorn Power and Energy partnered with Chevron Kalinga Ltd. to develop a geothermal project in Kalinga.

The company was actively involved in petroleum trading until the company phased it out in June 2006.
