It always depend on your plan, the very reAson why did you invest.
If the investment is good or profitable, your investment's return will be compounded annually, depending on how much capital u invested or added, somewhat similar to life insurance, etc.
It also depends on your timeframe.
Say you invested 5k and a minimal return of 10%, compounded annualy, say you keep on reinvesting your return/buy shares.

1st year 5Kx 110% = 5500
2nd - 5500 x 110%= 6050
3rd - 6050 x 110% = 6655
4th - 6655 x110% = 7,320
5th - 7,320 x 110% = 8,052
6th - 8,052 x 110% = 8,857
7th - 8,857 x 110% = 9,743
8Th - 9,743 x 110% = 10,717

Given rate is just conservative return, this means you double your money in less than 8 years. Return of investment, however, is not guaranteed as risk is always present. Nevertheless, you can become a successful trader, which i also want, if we know the principle of investing.

buy and hold for me no longer works for the longest term of 5 years. if that's you way to go, you have be really adept with valuation method, long term prospects, product/service innovation etc. don't let the broker decide and tell you if such company is great or not. brokers are sellers as well.

don't invest and expect to profit in a method you don't really know. if the broker suggested a stock, you should know the underlying reasons for it.

also have an excel file that computes average cost per share. your cost per share should always be below 10-20% prevailing price after a year or 2. if so, you can continue with averaging but be cautious and watch your average cost. if not, it's possible that you may end up averaging on a very expensive stock that your cost gets above prevailing price at 50% after 5 years.

it's not guaranteed that the value in time principle will always be true since many things will happen, like worldwide economic slowdown, recession, interest rates hike, government policy changes, exchange policy changes, stock splits, mergers, delisting, etc.

Dpende sayo, ways kase kumita sa stock market is simple rule buy low and sell high.
Your strategy might be tsupit or day trading or buy now sell later on the same day or two, short tem or hold until weeks or months or less than a year, or long term which is more than one year.

The return or net profit you can have depends on your stock pick. You can either choose penny stock, growth stock, blue chips. At times each pick outperforms each other, but the tricky part is the risk. At any rate, you can also have losses.
Therefore, you can minimize your risk by not putting your itlogs in one basket and most importantly, protect your hen, ur capital.

The science and art of investing are up for grabs. We can learn from market gurus, mentors, seminars, ebooks, etc.

What i like most here is stock market taught me to save, invest, reinvest, take profits and losses, learn how to be emotionally equip, control greed, be happy, contented, seek insights, find friends, have fun, and celebrate. It's not just money, or value of money, but ability to share with others what you have.

kung balak mong mag buy and hold or cost averaging, hanap ka ng company na maganda ang dividend payout at price growth, pero you can't always have the two in one company.

regarding sa selling, its really up to you. if you want to protect your capital then sell pag kumita ka na, iwan mo lang yung earnings mo at let profit run. pero kung kailangan mo na talaga ang pera e di sell all.
